Hello Greg and Lisa, Another Oscar is upon us! Good luck in the poll. I think the theme playing was from the Searchers and the last picture referred to in “The Last Picture Show” is Red River but this is straining my memory. Milwaukee native Spencer Tracy in “Father of the Bride” was playing at some point also.

Hi Greg,
Happy birhtday! 60 years old...wow! I won’t go into the “remember whens” because that is for the old guys to talk about...not us young guys. Think of your birthday this way...in China the 60th birthday is a great occasion for a man. It is the year where people <60 years old start treating a guy with great respect for the 60 years of experience he now has. Don’t know why but that is what my friends in China tell me. With that said, they may have just said that to me to make me feel better. I prefer to believe the respect story. Have made plans for Friday but wish you the best of birthdays.
Nick

Happy birthday, Greg. I was just recalling for someone the remarkable coincidence of our meeting in Ireland, and the fact Sue Krings moved from your place to mine. Hard to believe that was half a life time ago. I’ve been back to Ireland twice, 1997, 1998, and it simply isn’t the same; a great deal of development, especially along coastal areas. Happy 6 oh, it was a good year for me (now 61).

Hi Greg! Happy Birthday!
Here are some facts for you:
1) I’m back in Wisconsin for a while!
2) I don’t know where I’m going next, but I hope it’s either Washington DC or Taiwan
3) I will eventually get to Taiwan
4) around the turn of the century (from 1800s to 1900s) Portland, OR had the 2nd largest Chinatown (by population) in the United States, second to San Francisco.
5) I mistakenly say that the characters read from left to right in the following video. They actually read from right to left (which is what I meant to say!). Also, if I were being accurate I probably should have read them in Cantonese:

Greg you pant load ... appoximately 50 years ago you were the recipient of a Christmas gift set of Civil War soldiers (quite a large set of the small plastic figures in blue and grey).
You invited me over for a battle royale! You set up all the pieces (on a table next to the train setup in your basement) ... Union outnumbering Confederates 2X1, rebels sans artillery, yankees occupying the high groud ...
Then you dramatically announced that I would be the Confederates and you would be the Union ... and “let the war commence!”
It was, of course, a slaughter.
Just wondering if you ever felt the slightest pang of shame for that rout? Stacking the deck as you did.
It clearly had no effect on me ... I can barely recall the encounter :)
Happy 60! I’m due in October for the same milestone. All the best to you and your family.

Just wanted to wish you a happy birthday! July 2nd was the big day and I sure hope you had a celebration that you enjoyed! Things are going well for us here in Colorado and it would be great to see you and Lisa out here some day soon. Brother Bob has been deployed to Iraq and he leaves in a few weeks. We are having 36 people at our house on July 4th for a family gathering in his honor. Wish you were here-- we would light some special (but illegal) fireworks in your honor! Take care of yourself. Hope the year ahead is full of love, health, and happiness.

Hey, hey! You’re turning 60! Well, congratulations. We’ve all had a great trip getting to 60. Maybe we would do a few things differently along the way, but for the most part we wouldn’t change things. That “trip” is what has made us who we are and we’re pretty wonderful even if I do say so myself. I hope you have the absolutely best day 7/2 because you certainly deserve it. I’ve ordered the perfect weather for you too. Many many happy returns!!!!

Best of luck in the next year living your dreams. (Stay out of trouble so Lisa doesn’t have to worry.) Please keep in touch!

Hi Greg,
Happy birhtday!

How have you been feeling? I know that you had a health issue. I sure do wish I was doing this getting older more gracefully, but that just doesn’t seem to be happening. But I’m here and I am grateful for that.

Happy BDay Greggy,
Without your annual Oscar poll, I would be clueless and movieless. Since I need to fill out your Oscar survey, I am now determined to see as many movies as possible.
Thanks for opening up my life to escapism. It does wonders for the stress! Love ya, Sue

Hi Greg,
Just wanted to wish you a happy birthday!
Love--your cousin--Dolores (and Manny too)

Happy Belated Birthday, dear Greg! SO sorry Daniel and I couldn’t make it to your Open House. At the last minute, Daniel had to work late (til 8:00) and --- surprise --- Noah and his band mates finished sound check early and descended on us for dinner. So I had to switch gears, cook up a storm, and didn’t even have time to get online and wish you the best. Hope you had a fabulous birthday! Here’s to a great year ahead. xox - Gini

Happy Birthday! I turned 60 on May 23rd and have felt it every day since. That said, we have been very busy doing work on the house in St. Paul for our return to same next year, after Agnes retires.
Have a great Birthday!

Happy Birthday Greg. Hmmm... 60, you say? I don’t believe it!
In my family it is traditional to celebrate decade birthdays for the entire year. Basically, use it as an excuse for anything you want to do from going out for ice cream or a trip to Hawaii.

Greg,
Happy 60th! I had mine 15 years ago and will have to say that it was the beginning of a really enjoyable phase of life that continues. You have a lot to look forward to. I’ve really liked our movies discussions. We will not make it to Wisconsin this July if Rose has her party because of plans for a family visit in Texas. Have you seen “The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo? Potent stuff. I’d be interested in your reaction. Best from myself and from Nona.

Greg,
Belated Happy Birthday! Turned 60 myself not too long ago.
Many good times coming as well as many gone. Unfortunately you will start to feel the physical effects of your misspent youth more and more. Rx is ‘stay loose and keep on enjoying life no matter how much it hurts.

Greg I know I am only TWENTY years younger then you but trust me that is a lot. I mean twenty more years of living I can’t even imagine! Are you in a senior condo now? You would really like the new Twins stadium but I bet the stairs would be hard on you. Happy Birthday “MY ELDER” and God bless you from Andy, Jody, Vinnie, Frankie, and Gino!

We very much enjoyed meeting you yesterday on the ferry and had a most enjoyable dinner with you. We could have continued talking history and hope to one day in the future. Thanks so much for dinner--next encounter, we buy dinner. As we mentioned, we have already made plans for that Sept. weekend, but should our plans fall through we will join you. If not this year, another year. Will also be in contact when we get to Gettysburg. What is your friend’s name? Has he ever written about Gettysburg--would be good to refresh our knowledge before going. Have a great time in Door County. Enjoy your time back at school and most especially--have a WONDERFUL 50th birthday Lisa! Wishing you fair winds and following seas. (Joe’s favorite naval salutation)
