When I tell this story my wife has this "here we go again look, and my two kids-when they were teens-would hide their faces.
When I was in high school I was working as an usher in a local movie theatre. At that time any boomer knows it was not just a large screen, and crammed with seats. They had a stage, some art deco, sometimes a large chandelier. I came in one night and was told Annette was coming to the theater to promote one of her films. I was told to stay at the stage steps-this was considered security in those times-and all 97 lbs. of me was to keep anyone from going on there while she was there.
I couldn't believe it, my heartthrob was going to be within looking distance of me. It was a surreal dream.
She sang a few numbers, made a few remarks about how thrilled she was to he there, then came my way as she was exiting off the stage. When she reached the steps I put my hand out to her, she put her hand in mine and then....for the next several days I was big man on campus. Half the high school seen me hold her hand, guys came up to me and begged me to tell them what it was like to hold her hand. I couldn't answer, I was in a cosmic daze for almost a week, I floated above the ground.
All us boomers will miss you Annette, you were the girl that took us from childhood, through puberty, and straight into manhood.
Aww that's sad... she was a real nice lady.
She was my first crush in 1955 when I was only 9 years old. I really loved her.
Interesting on picture 11 she is wearing two Satanic pentagrams while kissing Mickey.
You have got to be kidding. You really believe that or are you just trolling?
ummmm they're stars not pentagrams. if that were the true case, the nighttime sky above disney is filled with satanists
I think there are thousands of men (of a certain age) that had her as a first crush. She was special.
Great perspective Joe! I suppose I fit into that same "Crush on Annette"
scenario also. From what I've read, Walt Disney was very protective of
Annette and her reputation. She couldn't wear swim suits where her
belly button would show. Although I have never seen anything to the
effect, I would take a bet that Walt and Disney made sure she never
needed anything after her declaration of MS. Well, I never got to first
base with Annette, there were too many miles between us, (2500) but I think it
was her influence that created my first "Puppy Love" with another
Italian; Donna A; in the fifth grade. RIP Annette, you will always be in
our minds and hearts!
Walt Disney died in 1966, long before Annette was diagnosed with MS.

I was nine and Annette...fourteen when I first remember her from the Mickey Mouse Club. She was a dream girl to me then! I will always remember her as she looked in 1956. Yes, she was a beautiful person all through her life. May God Always keep her as an angel in his Kingdom!
